SEMINAR PRESENTATION FEEDBACK

Some helpful hints for your ISU presentations:

GENERAL COMMENTS

  • Know your material well
  • Use cue cards, if required, with point-form prompts (have a script)
  • Smile
  • Practice! Practice! Practice!

PAY ATTENTION TO THE DESIGN

  • Pour creative juices into the cover slide
  • Avoid excessive “white” space (empty)
  • Maintain a strong contrast between text and background
  • Use contrasting text colours to draw attention
  • Use single images
  • Aim for simplicity
  • Use visuals to increase emotional appeal
  • Visuals should complement the text
  • Consistent FONT (Sans Serif Font is easiest to read)
  • Use font SIZE appropriately
  • Skip the stock template: IMPORT a theme
  • Use six or lesser number of lines of text
  • Avoid overuse of bullet points

GETTING TECHNICAL

  • Revise and edit carefully – everyone can see your mistakes 😦
  • Follow the rules of capitalization and punctuation
  • The title of the novella is always in italics
  • “By” is followed with your names (no punctuation)
  • Reread the handout on “Quoting Fiction” – “Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope” (1).
  • In-text referencing must follow all quotes
  • On your slide, state specifically the device used to reveal the theme (Characters, Thoughts, Conversations, Actions, Effects, Looks, Symbols, Motifs, Structure, Setting, Conflict, Narration, Events, Choices)
  • Text-to-World Connections were much too vague – provide a specific example (Footage of the Democratic House Speaker, Nanci Pelosi, was edited to make her appear drunk or unwell, in the latest incident highlighting social media’s struggle to deal with disinformation).
  • Connections should be of artistic or literary merit (credible)
  • Works Cited (plural), alphabetical order, hanging indent
  • Works Cited must include the primary text, ISU novel, poem/art work, world connections, images that are not Stock or Clip art.
